Legacy is an often forgotten concept. We often worry about how many likes our post has on social media but no so much how we'll be remembered in the years to come.
The passing of family members or beginning a family of your own often have a way of making you contemplate how you will be remembered. In my case it was motivation from a nudge by the wife as we look into our family trees. Primarily a project to build a collection of photos and details about family members for our son, attention then turned to my Great Grandfather, whom was a keen photographer also.
Whilst more discussion is needed it transpires that his tool of choice was a Voigtlander Vito B, a camera manufactured between1954-1960. An idea suggested was for me to try and get hold of a similar camera and experiment with the process of shooting & developing 35mm film with such a camera in an attempt to better understand and appreciate the man I did not have the pleasure of meeting. So I did!
I am now the proud owner of a 1958 Voigtlander Vito BR. A slight variation (a rare one at that with only 11,200 being produced) but more or less the same experience in use. It is a beautiful piece of mechanical engineering from a time before the digital takeover and to this day, working flawlessly.
Once I have had a chance to run a roll of film through the new BR I'll be sure to share the results. It is after all my first serious attempt at film photography!
Isn't it funny how a simple remark during conversation can send you down a rabbit hole.
